FAQs- Frequently Asked Questions and Answers 26. Will my electrical equipment work in Jamaica? Should I bring my laptop for Internet Access? The electricity supply in Jamaica is 110V - 50Hz, that is, 110 volts, 50 cycles. Most households in Jamaica utilize appliances and other electrical equipment sold in the USA. The electrical outlets in Jamaica are the same type as used in the USA and Canada. Our visitors from the United Kingdom will find that their plugs will not fit in Jamaican outlets and their 240V devices will not work. Many people bring a laptop to keep in touch while staying with us. Of course many people also view this as time to finally get a break from their laptops and email. Those of you bringing your laptop computers to Jamaica should check the power supply that comes with it as many of these are universal and they will work in Jamaica. But be sure to have the right type of plug (American type). You may simply plug your laptop into the telephone outlet at your villa. Of course, you need a dial-up account if the house in which you are staying does not provide ADSL. AOL has a local Jamaica number, so, if you are an AOL subscriber, be sure you know how to adjust your settings to use the local Jamaica number. Other Internet Service Providers (ISP) may also have Jamaica numbers. Please check with yours before you get to Jamaica. If your ISP does not have a Jamaica number, you may subscriber to a Jamaican ISP for the duration of your stay. Two well known ISPs are Cable & Wireless (http://www.cwjamaica.com) and Infochannel (http://www.infochan.com). Now available for purchase from us is Infochan's Netkyaad, which is a pre-paid Internet access card. This is probably the simplest and cheapest way of getting on-line, from as little as J$100 (i.e. less than US$2). See details on Infochan's web site at http://netkyaad.com/about.htm. Brief usage of the villa's telephone line will not incur any extra charge, but if you stay logged on for extended periods of time, you will be running up the villa phone bill and this will be for your account. Some houses now have wireless broadband (ADSL) internet connection. Please check the House Details on the web pages. You may also visit our Guest Services Office where you may connect to our ADSL line via ethernet cable or wirelessly for a small charge. If you do bring your laptop, please bring a lock and keep it safe as these are prime targets of opportunist thieves.
