Food Costs Reported By Guests

What will food cost me?

This Frequently Asked Question has been very difficult for me to answer. I have requested guests to send me reports on what they actually spent when they were vacationing with us, so I may share this information with anyone interested. Here are some reports with actual quotes from the guests' letters to me:

1. Two couples who spent a week at Rum Jetty, February '00, spent US$20 per person per day.

"to give you an idea on our trip ....we spent 225USD at Hillside and about 250USd on veg, fish, snacks at commisary etc... for four adults (who drink a lot of Rum and Beer.... on vacation only of course....) and two children...(extra veg & fruit). For that we ate like kings ....every meal ....three meals a day ....fresh fruit, toast and eggs/bacon each morning .....sandwiches & salad at lunch and lobster or fresh fish at dinner. Average cost would be, I would say, 120 USD per week per adult ingoring the kids. or 20 USD a day."

2. A mother with three adult children who spent 9 days at Primrose Path, February '00, spent a maximum of US$7 per person per day.

"We paid somewhere between US$200 and US$250 for 4 people for 9 days."

3. A single adult who spent a week at Queen's Cottage, January '00, spent US$20 per day.

"When I got there, I had a bill for $90 US for my staples which included my rum punch makings, 12-pack red stripe, etc. Then I got the following:
carrots, 2lbs 40J
cucumbers, 1lb 40J
Potatos, 2lbs 40J
Melon, 4 lbs, 120J
Lettuce 1 lbs, 40J
Papaya, 2 lbs, 80J
Onion, 1/2 lb, 10J
3 T-Bone Steaks, at about $1.50US each
1 lb bacon, at about $3.25 US
4 Chicken breasts, at about $5.00
Pork Chops, at about $3.00 lb.
Pepsi, at $.80 US each (10)
I ate some beef patties from the bar 3 times, at about $1.00 each
Odds/Ends (jerk chicken, beers, rum punches, 1 night of dining out) $25.00

Total "food" costs, including alcohol, was about $165.00 for the week. I ate well for that too!! I would say $20 a day is about right, per person, including alcohol."

4. A small family comprising two adults and two small children who spent a week at Blue Vista Villa in January '00, spent less than US$12 per person per day.

"One caveat is that we don't drink beer or wine so we had no such expenditures. We were two adults and two children. We had three meals a day at the house which were more than adequate. The cost for food was US$45 per day. We did not cut corners only after a few days we started to eat leftovers for lunch from supper.

The meals were good, and generous and included desserts.
